Alleged Steam Deck Prototype Sold On eBay For US$2,000

An alleged prototype of the Steam Deck was recently posted up for sale on eBay. Even more surprising, someone actually bought it for a handsome sum of US$2,000 (~RM8,845).

Redditor Gary_the_mememachine lays claim to the discovery, saying that they found it being listed on the e-commerce site under the title “Early Valve Engineering 34 Prototype Steam Deck 256GB, Tested, Please Read!”

The alleged Steam Deck prototype itself certainly gives off the vibes of “early design”. The pictures suggests that it’s about the right size as the currently existing console, just with the dual rounded trackpads, blue colour trigger and shoulder buttons, and a less ergonomical placement of the four rear buttons. That, and the “engineering sample” sticker can be seen clearly at the back, as well as the notice that it is not for sale.

Beyond that, there’s no evidence that the device runs but to be fair, it’s likely that whoever purchased the Steam Deck prototype only did so for bragging rights and, if it turns out to be authentic, be the owner of a piece of gaming handheld history in the process.
