PETALING JAYA: Amid the worsening floods in Terengganu, netizens have started asking questions on the whereabouts of menteri besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, who they say seems absent in the state.
Some 40,450 people in the east coast state have been evacuated to 299 relief centres as of this morning, an increase of nearly 1,000 compared to the 39,500 staying at the evacuation centres last night.
In a Facebook post yesterday, Samsuri thanked Selangor for donating about RM500,000 to Terengganu for flood victims and pledging to mobilise humanitarian aid.
However, netizens commented on the post with sarcastic jibes at Samsuri over his apparent absence in assisting flood victims, while some questioned if the menteri besar was away on holiday.
Facebook users Faiz Amir, Mohd Aiman and Fazari Ghazali asked Samsuri, “Where are you, MB?”
Mohd Shukry Roslan quipped that the menteri besar might be managing the state with a “remote control”, questioning why Samsuri seemed to be away when he knew the state would be affected by the monsoon season.
Some asked if Samsuri was currently in Auckland, New Zealand, with one Rashid Jemain questioning where the PAS vice-president was publishing the Facebook post from.
“Prioritise more critical and important matters. I hope MPs and assemblymen will go the ground to help the flood victims,” said Muhammad Faizal Abu Bakar, one of the less cynical comments on Samsuri’s post.
On Twitter, netizens also questioned why Samsuri was not there to welcome deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who had visited victims in Terengganu yesterday evening after the Dewan Rakyat sitting ended.
Twitter user @apeinhd said it would have been protocol for the menteri besar to welcome and join the deputy prime minister on his visit, though they were not from the same party.
FMT has reached out to Samsuri’s office for comment.
Heavy rain is expected to persist in Terengganu until Thursday, according to the meteorological department.
A two-year-old girl was the first casualty of the floods in Terengganu. She drowned at Kampung Apal in Jerteh, Besut, on Sunday.
