PETALING JAYA: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) chairman Hajiji Noor promised Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim the coalition’s full support during a visit to his office in Putrajaya today.
In a statement, Hajiji, who is also the Sabah chief minister, hoped today’s meeting would mark the start of closer ties and a working relationship with Anwar and the federal government for the benefit of Sabah and the well-being of its people.
In a Facebook post, Pakatan Harapan chairman Anwar said he welcomed GRS’ support.
Yesterday, Hajiji said he was confident that Perikatan Nasional chief Muhyiddin Yassin would understand GRS’ decision to join Anwar’s unity government.
GRS had earlier aligned itself with PN and supported Muhyiddin as the nominee to be prime minister.
“We think about the interests of Sabah under GRS. We give priority to this state.
“I think Tan Sri (Muhyiddin) knows about this and he is smart. I think there is no problem because this is our decision in GRS,” he said after the tabling of Sabah’s 2023 budget at the state assembly.
GRS is a coalition of Sabah Bersatu, STAR, Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) and Usno. Bersatu, SAPP and STAR are also part of the Muhyiddin-led PN.
On Friday, Anwar said GRS, the ruling coalition in Sabah, had decided to join his government, giving it a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat.
Anwar leads a unity government comprising PH, Barisan Nasional (BN), Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) and GRS, with support from MPs from Muda, Warisan, Parti Bangsa Malaysia and independents.
Hajiji’s visit today comes after GPS chairman Abang Johari Openg, who is also the Sarawak premier, paid a courtesy call on Anwar at his residence yesterday.
BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail were also present at the meeting.
