BYD M6 best-selling EV in Nov, Sealion 7 5th – Atto 3 still top YTD, but Tesla Model 3 overtakes Seal to 2nd
It was only launched in October, but the BYD M6 appears to be already making an impression on buyers. The electric MPV was the best-selling EV last month, as the Chinese carmaker works to fulfil pent-up demand – last we heard, there were nearly 1,000 bookings placed within the first month.
Some 236 units were registered in November, and together with the 100 units reaching customers’ hands in October, it means that the M6 sits 12th in the year-to-date standings with 336 units registered – notably, it’s already several spots higher than cars like the MINI Countryman SE, Xpeng G6 and BMW iX1.
In second place is the Tesla Model 3 with 197 units registered in November. The sedan seems to have gained a second wind ever since the pre-eminent EV maker dropped prices in April. Having consistently outsold its biggest rival, the BYD Seal, since August, the car now holds a razor-thin lead in the YTD stakes (2,667 versus 2,664) but will need an almighty December if it’s to overhaul the BYD Atto 3 (2,749 units).
That’s going to be especially difficult given that the SUV is continuing to sell well despite stiff competition, dropping just seven registrations to the Model 3 (190 units). The Seal sits fourth with 130 units registered, while BYD’s other new car, the Sealion 7, opens its books with 128 units registered in its first month, rounding out the top five.
In a bumper month for BYD, all its models are in the top seven, the Dolphin (a round 100 units) sitting behind the aforementioned Xpeng G6 (122 units). Perhaps as a result of rumours of the “Juniper” facelift coming soon, sales of the Tesla Model Y have faltered slightly, with registrations dipping into the double digits (75 units) for the second successive month. Having placed as high as second in the YTD standings in June, the SUV is now destined to finish fourth in the chasm between the Seal and the Dolphin (1,397 units).
Rounding off the top ten are the MG4 (66 units) and BMW iX1 (65 units). As for the YTD standings, sixth, seventh and eighth places are held by the GWM Ora (07 and Good Cat, 555 units registered) and smart (#1 and #3, 549 units) models and the Chery Omoda E5 (531 units), which continue to cling on despite not figuring anywhere in the top ten in November; they are joined by the MG4 (460 units) and, surprisingly, the BMW i5 (426 units). Then again, a second strong month for the M6 could vault it past all of them.
