Casio’s New Woodwork-Inspired G-SHOCK MR-G Smartwatch For The Win!

Casio has revealed another entry to its storied, luxury G-SHOCK MR-G line of wristwatches – the brand new MRG2100B-1A. The state-of-the-art watch masterfully blends artisanal Japanese craft with a functional and durable full-metal body designed to last a lifetime.

This stunning timepiece pays homage to the way craftsmen made traditional Japanese houses and heavily draws inspiration from kigumi, the art of wood jointing with no nails or supports.

To properly honour the storied craft, the MRG2100B-1A includes a unique decorative structure that exemplifies the artistry that goes into each kigumi structure or piece – a piece you can’t stop looking at through the watch’s scratch-resistant, highly-transparent sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating.

The wristwatch’s dial is corrugated and features an intricate series of openings to create a geometric pattern that beautifully expresses a latticework worldview. The intricate series of openings in the face let enough light through for solar power generation, allowing the dial to be finished in a deep metallic black.

Furthermore, the index mark at 12 of the clock has an intricately assembled two-part structure. This type of craftsmanship, which requires extreme precision, is only possible due to Yamagata Casio’s fine processing technologies.

Housing this delicate work of art are a series of super-hard alloys developed in Japan that can weather even the harshest bumps, drops, and scrapes. The top bezel is made with COBARION, a cobalt-chromium alloy, which is said to be four times harder than pure titanium, but gleams as vividly as clear platinum.

The band links are made of DAT55G, a titanium alloy that is three times harder than pure titanium and has excellent processability. Casio used super-hard alloys developed in Japan to create an exterior design that is both strong and beautiful. And lastly, a special Ti64 titanium alloy is used for the case, case back, and buttons.

For maximum protection, the wristwatch is divided into several core and minute structures, which Casio refers to as a “multi-guard structure.” To support the intricate form, a buffering layer is placed between the multi-component bezel and case, providing incredible shock absorption from the very core of the watch up to its crown. Additionally, the piece also offers a 200 metre water resistance.

Although it’s largely an accessory meant to be talked about, the MRG2100B-1A comes with a few tricks of its own. Smartwatches have been all the rage as of late, which comes as no surprise. The much-needed functionality outside of typical timekeeping has proven itself to be vital on most occasions.

That’s why you can link up the MRG2100B-1A with your smartphone via Bluetooth for radio control and enhanced accuracy and reliability. But unlike your traditional smartwatch, you never have to charge this piece, because, as we mentioned earlier, it runs on solar power.

This rugged yet sleek timepiece retails for US$4,800 (~RM22,548). Check it out at G-SHOCK’s official website.
