Tales of modded NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPUs are a dime a dozen, even more so in China, given the restrictions that are in place against the country by the US. In this case, a Reddit post revealed how Chinese modders are selling RTX 4090 GPUs with double their original graphics memory.
Apparently, some modders have successfully modded RTX 4090s to run with 48GB of GDDR6X memory, listing them down on online marketplaces as custom-made, for obvious reasons. Not only that but the modded GPUs are also being sold with watercooler attachments, specifically a 360mm radiator but with the AIO pump located on the outside.

For those of you wondering how such modified RTX 4090s can exist, this technically goes back to last year, when horror stories of stripped-down 4090 GPUs began making their way into second-hand marketplaces, and gamers were being scammed out of their hard earned cash. These cards were basically stripped of the main GPU and their VRM chips.
The memory chips of the RTX 4090 are just as important, as some of these cards use dual-sided PCBs, which is technically how these modified GPUs are able to run with 48GB GDDR6X memory. As for how much it cost, this particular unit reportedly sells for US$3,400 (~RM15,000).
The idea of changing out memory resistors to allow GPUs to accommodate for greater memory capacity isn’t difficult per se, just tedious and time consuming. That said, it’s only a matter of time before modders begin switching the graphics memory capacity of an RTX 5090, either with double the capacity or more than that, even.
