The popular survival horror game is now on the silver screen! “Until Dawn” started as a critically acclaimed video game spotlighting a group of young adults who have to survive a masked killer on the loose. Ten years after the game’s release, it’s now a highly anticipated horror flick that will send shivers up your spine.
Directed by David F. Sandberg and written by Blair Butler and Gary Dauberman, the premise of “Until Dawn” is as follows: one year after her sister Melanie mysteriously disappeared, Clover and her friends head into the remote valley where she vanished in search of answers. Exploring an abandoned visitor centre, they find themselves stalked by a masked killer and horrifically murdered one by one, only to wake up and find themselves back at the beginning of the same evening.
Now trapped in the valley, they’re forced to relive the night again and again – only each time the killer threat is different, each more terrifying than the last. Hope dwindling, the group soon realizes they have a limited number of deaths left, and the only way to escape is to survive until dawn. The film stars an ensemble cast, including Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Odessa A’zion, Ji-young Yoo, Belmont Cameli, Maia Mitchell, and Peter Stormare.
While the movie is based on a video game, director David says anyone can enjoy the film. He said, “It’s in the same universe as the game. You could say it’s a sequel, but it’s a sequel you don’t have to have played the game to enjoy”. He added, “The game was already so much like a movie that I thought this was the more interesting way to go. This way you get more ‘Until Dawn’ instead of a cut-down, re-cast copy of what was already done.”
David also praised the writing team, saying the script drew him to the project. He said, “I know the writers, Gary and Blair, talked a lot with the makers of the game while writing the script. Fan engagement has been mostly through early screenings. They’ve been very positive”. While there were some comments about how the movie might stray from the game, the director said, “There are definitely easter eggs and connections to the game. I’m hoping that the fan base will like it as much as the fans that have seen it so far.”
