In the May 17 incident, a 21-year-old man stormed into the police station at Ulu Tiram, Johor, killing two policemen and injuring Hasif Roslan.
PETALING JAYA: A policeman who sustained injuries in the lone wolf attack on the Ulu Tiram police station in Johor last month has shed details on the assault, including how the assailant hid after killing two cops.
Hasif Roslan, now a sergeant, said he was out on patrol duty in the early hours of May 17 when he was ordered to return to the station by its chief.
Upon arrival, he saw a lifeless body next to the station’s barracks before being told that one of his colleagues had been killed, Bernama reported.
“My colleagues told me that the station had been attacked but the suspect was not visible at that time. Suddenly, the attacker opened fire at us and I was hit in the hip and shoulder,” he said.
Despite being covered in blood, Hasif joined three other policemen in trying to track down the masked attacker, and managed to fire several shots in return.
The attacker was shot and killed at the scene, though it is unclear if Hasif had a hand in that.
The former constable with the station’s crime prevention patrol unit was rushed to the hospital, but was conscious and managed to call his wife to inform her of what had happened.
“I did not want her and our children to worry,” said Hasif, who has been in the force for 14 years.
A month after the incident, Hasif is still receiving treatment for his wounds, but is more than eager to continue serving as a policeman to safeguard the nation’s security.
Yesterday, at a rank conferment ceremony (field and posthumous) presided by home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Hasif was promoted to sergeant.
The two policemen who were killed – Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar, 22, and Syafiq Ahmad Said, 24 – were given posthumous promotions.
The assailant was previously suspected by police of being a member of Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), but this was later retracted and denied by Saifuddin.
Five family members of the attacker are being detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).
