The following are a few basic tips on how to create or keep a website looking clean.

- WHITE SPACE – I know this one sounds simple, but having a good amount of white makes a website look more appealing.
- FONT – Stay away from using some neat looking font such as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Simpsons, etc., and stick with the basic fonts that most users have on their computers. The reason for this is that most users do not have these unique fonts installed, therefore when they view your website that includes a font such as these, it will not show up correctly on their screen, it will switch to a default font so that it will be displayed.
- IMAGES – Avoid using images that have large file sizes. Using too large files will decrease the loading time of your webpage. Another tip to help improve loading time for images is to specify the size of the image. For example;
- SOUNDS – Do not use background music or sounds. They're just annoying.
- BACKGROUND – Stay away from using image backgrounds, it let's the whole world know you're an amateur. They also decrease the loading time of your page.
- MENUS – Be sure to include the menu options on every page to make your site easily navigatable.
- ADVERTISING – Online advertising has become HUGE and many people make a living from advertising alone. The more advertising you have, the higher the chances of getting clicks to generate money. But you do not want to over-do it. A nice ratio would be a 3-1 ratio or 75% content to 25% advertising. And remember, content is key!
- POP-UPS – NO POP-UPS! Period!
- PAGE LENGTH – Keep pagelength to a minimum. 2 page lengths seems idea without it's a full article, then I would say no longer than 6 page lengths. If it is longer than that, I'd make it multiple pages.
- SPELLCHECK – Remember, spellchecker is your friend. Develop a good relationship with it.
- INTERNAL LINKS – Do not design internal links (links to another page of your website) to open in external windows. It's annoying.
- LINKS – Never use the words "link" or "click here" as the text for the link. Readers typically scan though pages looking for what appeals to them and "click here" just does not do it.
