Google has announced that it will discontinue the sale and use of Play gift cards and prepaid balance in Malaysia effective 15 June 2025. The tech giant is advising users to redeem and utilise any remaining balances by 31 January 2026, after which all unspent amounts will expire and become unusable.
Malaysian users who still hold unredeemed gift cards are encouraged to transfer their value into their Google Play accounts and spend it on apps, games, or digital content before the deadline. Once expired, these funds will no longer be valid for transactions or refunds. Affected users are encouraged to take action promptly to avoid losing any remaining credit.
Google notes that for purchases exceeding the available Play balance, users can combine their balance with other payment methods, such as credit or debit cards and e-wallets. Those relying solely on Play balance are advised to add an alternative payment method via their Google Account settings to ensure continued access to paid content.
To review any remaining balance, users can go to their Google account, select ‘Payments and subscriptions,’ and then tap on ‘Payment methods.’ This section will display the current Play balance along with the amount scheduled to expire.
Google did not provide a reason for discontinuing Play gift cards in Malaysia, which were introduced locally in 2018. However, Malaysia is not alone in this change, as Google also ceased sales of the cards in Singapore earlier this year in February.
