Heavy traffic expected at Tuas, Woodlands checkpoints in Singapore ahead of Raya, school hols

Travellers crossing over into Malaysia from Singapore can expect heavy traffic at the Tuas and Woodlands checkpoints as Raya and the island nation’s school holidays draw near, Singapore’s Straits Times reports, citing an Immigation and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) statement.

Chinese New Year 2025 saw over three million travellers cross the two checkpoints from January 24-30, peaking at 521,000 on January 24. During peak periods, car travellers took as long as three hours to clear immigration due to traffic tailback from Malaysia, the ICA said.

Singapore’s March school holidays begin on the 14th and end on the 24th, while the Hari Raya holiday period is from March 28 to April 1.

The ICA recommends the use of QR codes instead of passports for those going by car and motorcycle, and that motorists check the traffic situation at the land checkpoints before embarking on their journey. Queue-cutters will be turned away and redirected to the end of the line, it added.

Travellers can consider using the cross-border bus service as an alternative – operating hours and timings can be found on the Land Transport Authority‘s MyTransport.SG app or on the operator’s website.

Malaysians entering and leaving Singapore by vehicle have been able to use QR codes instead of passports since March 19, 2024. The Malaysian government is planning to implement the same for car users at Johor’s Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) and Sultan Abu Bakar Complex (KSAB) this year, following successful implementation for bus passengers and motorcyclists.
