JPJ issued nearly 9,000 summonses in first three days of special operation focused on commercial vehicles
The road transport department (JPJ) has issued 8,701 summonses since beginning its special operation, focusing on commercial vehicles nationwide, reported New Straits Times.
The department had screened 32,178 vehicles since the operation was launched on October 1, said JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli.
“The main focus of our operation is to take stern action against commercial vehicle owners who fail to comply with the rules set under the Road Transport Act 1987, Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board Act 1987, Land Public Transport Act and other traffic regulations. We also want to screen overloading of vehicles as there have been several fatal accidents involving lorries lately,” he said.
Over the past three days, the department had checked 12,282 goods vehicles, 1,274 public vehicles and 18,622 other vehicles, according to the news report. 8,701 summonses were issued for various offences, of which 6,430 were for technical violations, 990 for suspected overloading and 339 at weigh-ins, the JPJ D-G said.
“The operation will run until October 31 with cooperation from the police and National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK). During the operation to date, 38 drivers were screened and seven of them tested positive for drugs,” he said, adding that federal and trunk roads will be monitored, and especially roads which have never had operations conducted upon.
