Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) today announced that it will adopt a fully cashless ticketing system across Malaysia from 1 January 2025, covering services in the Klang Valley, northern, southern, and east coast sectors. This initiative is part of its drive toward a more efficient and competitive service, as well as to support Malaysiaโs shift towards a digital economy and the transition to a cashless society.
According to the companyโs social media channels, supported cashless payment systems include its own Komuter Link card and KTMB Mobile (KITS) app. Meanwhile, third-party platforms such as MyDebit, Visa, Mastercard, Touch โn Go, Google Pay, Apple Pay, and Samsung Pay are included as well.

KTMB Group CEO Datuk Mohd Rani Hisham Samsudin highlighted that the transition phase has already started to prepare passengers for the change. He also noted that the company recognises that while this change reflects the future of digital payments, it may initially create inconvenience for passengers who rely on cash for purchases.
โDuring this transition period, ticket counters will continue to accept cash transactions,โ Mohd Rani said in a statement. โHowever, once the initiative is implemented, all transactions will be cashless.โ
In efforts to spread awareness of the upcoming shift to cashless payments, KTMB is running a campaign until the end of 2024, primarily targeting the elderly, people with disabilities, and those less familiar with digital technologies. The company says it has employed a range of channels, including its social media platforms, printed materials at stations, and in-train announcements. Additionally, it has partnered with local banks to assist individuals without debit cards, allowing them to register at select stations and receive further support.ย
The company adds that staff at every station will play a critical role in helping passengers register for the KTMB Mobile (KITS) app or the Komuter Link card, through which they can purchase tickets. Additionally, they will also be available to assist passengers with kiosk machines for cashless ticket purchases. To further encourage cashless transactions, KTMB is offering incentives, including 500 free rail points for the first 1,000 KITS registrations and 1,000 complimentary Komuter Link cards.
