While they are considered role models for some, many local influencers have gotten into legal trouble. Recently, Malaysian influencer Sarah Leo made headlines after getting charged with stealing her ex-boyfriend’s handphone – but she claims that is not entirely the truth.
According to reports, 33-year-old Sarah Leo Ee May (莎拉廖依美) was accused of stealing an OPPO Reno8 5G smartphone worth RM2,000 from a parked car. The phone belonged to a 27-year-old man named Andrew Yeap Hue Bing, who news outlets report as Sarah’s ex-boyfriend. The incident happened on 26th April 2024 at the Gleneagles Hospital in Penang.

Sarah was charged with theft under Section 379 of the Penal Code but pleaded not guilty. The case prosecutor initially set bail at RM7,000, but the influencer’s lawyer pleaded for the minimum amount, contending that the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding between Sarah and her ex. The court has fixed 24th July for mention and set the bail at RM3,000 with one surety. If convicted, Sarah could face up to seven years in jail or fine, or both.
Following the news, Sarah took to Instagram to address the situation. In her first posting, she thanked the public, her family and her husband for their support during this difficult time. However, Sarah also eluded at her innocence, claiming she would never cause trouble. She also claimed that Andrew isn’t an ex as previously reported, adding that “none of her exes would have treated her so badly”.
Sarah never revealed her relationship with the man or whether she knew him during the incident. Nevertheless, this mention does point out a discrepancy between her and her lawyer. Unfortunately, we may not get an answer since Sarah said she will no longer share updates about her involvement in the case, given that she’s “not a singer or a celebrity”.
