Malaysia has made a small step to relieve some of its air pollution problems – in the news recently as choking smog from forest fires in neighbouring Indonesia have covered the country.
A new “national truck”, the HICOM Perkasa, has begun rolling from the production lines – with an engine designed to reduce exhaust emmissions, and tax-breaks for those who use it. The Perkasa’s engine conforms to stringent European exhaust standards – a first in Malaysia, where the booming economy’s heavy dependence on road transport has lead to serious pollution in the cities – even before smog from Indonesia worsened into an environmental crisis that has claimed lives and threatens the health of millions of people.
In Malaysia, the lower exhaust emmisions from the engine will entitle users to a fifty-per cent reduction in road taxes.
