More evacuated in Kedah but situation eases in Perlis, Penang

KUALA LUMPUR: The number of flood evacuees in Kedah rose to 6,760 tonight, an increase of 185, while the flood situation in Perlis and Penang has shown signs of improvement.

Welfare department figures showed there were 2,171 families being housed in 41 temporary relief centres in Kedah.

Kota Setar recorded the highest number of evacuees, totalling 3,003, followed by Kubang Pasu with 1,602, Pendang (933), Pokok Sena (910), Kuala Muda (184) and Bandar Baharu (128). Two relief centres in Kulim were closed this afternoon.

The irrigation and drainage department reported that six rivers in the state are at dangerous water levels.

In Perak, a relief centre was opened in Bagan Serai, Kerian, to accommodate 16 evacuees following an overflow of Sungai Kerian earlier this afternoon. Jalan Selama-Bagan Serai was inundated by floodwaters.

In Penang, two relief centres were closed this afternoon, but 427 evacuees remained at five relief centres, while the number of evacuees in Perlis dropped by 10 to 98 people tonight.

In Selangor, 101 evacuees were accommodated at the Tanjong Karang farmer’s management institute after high tide flooded Kampung Baru Lembah Pantai.
