PETALING JAYA: Selangor has recorded the highest number of sexual crimes in the country over the past three years, according to Bukit Aman.

Bukit Aman sexual, women and child investigation division principal assistant director Siti Kamsiah Hassan said the cases recorded in Selangor involved crimes such as molestation, incest and child pornography.

She also said these statistics were largely due to Selangor’s higher population relative to other states, Sinar Harian reported.

“Selangor’s proximity to several states such as Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Kuala Lumpur, and Pahang is a contributing factor to these crimes, followed by Johor,” she told reporters after a dialogue with the community at the Selangor police headquarters.

Kamsiah added that easy access to the internet, population density, and other economic factors had contributed to the number of sexual crimes in Selangor.

She said the B40 group had some of the highest involvement in these crimes, based on the records over the past three years.

“We see this overall trend due to the unstable economic conditions of this group, along with factors such as unemployment and lack of education.

“Economic pressure leads to emotional stress, affecting relationships and resulting in poor parenting practices,” she added.

She also said 90% of the cases involved locals while cases involving foreigners, including tourists, occurred at petrol stations and on public transport.

“Nevertheless, the highest percentage involves locals,” she said.
