Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called for stricter enforcement, stronger governance and the use of latest technologies to improve river water management.
KUALA LUMPUR: The National Water Council has agreed to establish a working committee to examine the threat of water pollution in the country.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said this was part of a strategy to enhance river water monitoring and strengthen the management and research of pollutants in Malaysia’s water resources.
“There are many implications resulting from water pollution and some of them are matters of concern,” he said in a Facebook post.
“Therefore, I emphasised the importance of (stricter) enforcement, stronger governance and the use of latest technologies to improve river water management throughout the country,” he said after chairing a National Water Council meeting in Putrajaya today.
He said the government would continue focusing on reducing non-revenue water, which remains at an unsatisfactory level.
Anwar also said reducing non-revenue water would help ensure the sustainability of the country’s water resources.
The National Water Council serves as a platform for the federal and state governments to review and discuss the management of water resources.
