PETALING JAYA: Police have opened an investigation into the waving of foreign flags at another international cultural event in Sentosa, Johor Bahru, recently.
Johor Bahru Selatan police chief Raub Selamat said they received a video of the gathering, depicting individuals waving the flags of several foreign countries, and that a report was lodged at 3pm yesterday.
Raub said the investigation is being held under Section 3(1) of the National Emblems (Control of Display) Act for the display of national emblems in public; Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for statements that incite public disorder; and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for improper use of network facilities.
He said the organisers of the event would be summoned to assist in the investigation, Berita Harian reported.
Police are also investigating a similar event organised by the Guan Gong Cultural Association in Teluk Intan, Perak, which sparked controversy over the waving of China’s flag at a parade.
The Guan Gong Cultural Association has since apologised and said the flags were displayed by Chinese nationals attending the festival and had not been planned by the organisers.
MCA vice-president Tan Teik Cheng and DAP’s Ayer Keroh assemblyman Kerk Chee Yee questioned why certain quarters were only making a fuss about the Chinese flags when other flags were also waved.
Kerk, the Melaka assembly deputy speaker, said he attended a similar parade for the same festival in Johor Bahru on Oct 20 and that the flags of Vietnam and Thailand were also waved by participants.
