KUALA LUMPUR: The meteorological department (MetMalaysia) has forecast the onset of a second wave of floods within the next two weeks beginning tomorrow, with Pahang and Johor among the states expected to be affected.
In Sabah and Sarawak, floods are expected to occur only from the end of this month until March, deputy prime minister and National Disaster Management Committee chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.
“We hope this second wave will not be as severe as the first. However, it is expected to impact Johor and Pahang more significantly. We are ready and have mobilised our services, assets, personnel and equipment.
“We also expect the social welfare department to coordinate efforts by NGOs nationwide,” he said after sending off volunteers from the Barisan Nasional post-flood relief mission to the east coast and northern region here today.
Zahid said fewer than 10,000 evacuees remain in temporary relief centres, compared to 153,000 on Dec 1.
He also said 222,000 flood victims have received aid to date, with NGOs supporting relief efforts.
