PH retains Pulai, Simpang Jeram with reduced majority

Pakatan Harapan (PH) has retained the Pulai parliamentary seat and the Simpang Jeram state seat in the Johor by-elections today.

PH candidates Nazri Abdul Rahman and Suhaizan Kayat won the Simpang Jeram seat and the Pulai seat with a majority of 3,514 and 18,641 votes, respectively.

Nazri, the Bakri Amanah deputy chief, obtained 13,844 votes to beat Dr Mohd Mazri Yahya from Perikatan Nasional (PN), who received 10,330 votes, and independent candidate S Jeganathan, who got only 311 votes and lost his deposit.

Meanwhile, Suhaizan, who was making his seventh appearance in electoral contests, polled 48,283 votes to beat PN’s Zulkifli Jaafar, who received 29,642 votes, and independent candidate Samsudin Mohamad Fauzi, who obtained 528 votes and lost his deposit.

According to the Election Commission, there are 40,379 registered voters in Simpang Jeram and 166,653 registered voters in Pulai.

The two by-elections were held following the death of Salahuddin Ayub, who was Amanah deputy president, on July 23.

Salahuddin had won Pulai with a majority of 33,174 votes and Simpang Jeram with a 2,399-vote majority.
