TAIPING: Proposed changes to the Personal Data Protection Act will ensure that stored personal data is secure, digital minister Gobind Singh Deo said today.
“If there is a data breach or hacking incident, we need to put legal provisions in place to mandatorily provide notice of the incident,” he said, according to Bernama.
The amendments are expected to be tabled in the current Dewan Rakyat session. Gobind said the law would provide convenience and help improve the standard of business and daily life for Malaysians.
It would not affect the government’s efforts to create a new law to combat online fraud, he said.
In February, law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said said a new Act was being drafted with provisions for a “kill switch” to enhance digital security in combating rising online fraud.
Gobind said implementation of data protection would be coordinated and fully enforced by the digital ministry, while the new law on online fraud will involve cooperation between the communications ministry and the home ministry.
“We will still collaborate to address complaints and when complaints are made, we will review the direction in which these complaints can be forwarded and resolved by the relevant ministries,” Gobind said.
