Proton eMas 7 EV convoy taken on 10,432 km regional road trip – nine Asean countries traversed in 22 days
Proton has taken the eMas 7 on a road trip across nine ASEAN countries as part of the ASEAN Unity Drive 2025, a regional road trip led by the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii). The journey covered 10,432 km over a duration of 22 days, according to Proton.
On the journey, the drive took the eMas 7 through Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, the Philippines, East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak), Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore before the return journey back to Malaysia. The journey saw the eMas 7 surpass its initial target of 9,000 km by more than 1,400 km, the carmaker said.
“There were some challenging routes where the road condition was bad and some of the routes took us far from the charging point. We encountered one situation where the charging point was farther than the remaining range. We stopped at a coffee shop to use the portable AC charging to make up for the shortage of battery percentage so we could reach the charging point,” said participant Mohd Adib bin Mohd Azam.

“We had anticipated the trip from Lao to Cambodia would be challenging due to the availability of the next charging station from Pakse to Krong Kracheh, which is 356 km away. It gave us a bit of range anxiety although it was well within the range of the vehicle’s claimed distance. Driving conditions is a constant variable,” said another participant, Muhammad Taufiq bin Mohd Zin.
Charging an electric vehicle in a foreign land required the use of local mobile applications and search engines to locate charging points, another participant recalled. “Yes, due to the unavailability and timing of charging stations, especially in Laos, we brought a mobile charger to tap into the domestic household current supply,” said Wan Kok Chai.
“Everyone who has ever worked on the Proton eMas 7 project can be proud of this achievement. This journey belongs to all of us,” said Pro-Net CEO Zhang Qiang.
In addition to its undertaking of the ASEAN Unity Drive 2025, the Proton eMas 7 was also pressed into service in the 2025 ASEAN Summit, while 61 units of the Proton EV were used as official vehicles at the ASEAN Economic Ministers retreat in February, as well as the ASEAN SOM meeting in Langkawi in January this year.
