Rapid KL On-Demand vans will accept debit and credit cards from today. This was announced by transport minister Anthony Loke, who said that 20 vans current operating in seven zones will be fitted with card payment readers starting today. The open payment system is expected to be fully operational by May.
Rapid KL On-Demand, the new name for Demand Responsive Transit (DRT), is operating in 37 zones with 110 vans, and will continue to expand with a target of 320 vans by June, Loke said, reported by Malay Mail. The fare is RM1 per ride, or free if you’re a My50 pass holder.
“We have invested billions in the Klang Valley transport system, including two MRT lines and by the end of the year, the third LRT line will be ready. But for these rail lines to be effective, we need strong first and last mile connectivity and for this we are thankful to the finance ministry and the prime minister for their commitment to improving public transport,” Loke said.
The average waiting time for Rapid KL On-Demand is around 10 minutes while the total journey time is around 10 to 20 minutes. The planned expansion aims to reduce both figures. Well received, the vans have around 4,000 passengers daily now, but with more vans and zones planned, the target is 36,000 passengers per day.
