PETALING JAYA: The families of two Chinese tourists who died when uprooted tree crushed a van in George Town have received a RM10,000 donation from the Tanjong parliamentary service centre.

Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying said each family received RM5,000, and her service centre would provide additional assistance if required.

The donations were presented to the family’s representatives today by Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng as Lim, who is the deputy finance minister, is overseas on official duty.

On Sept 18, a tree from an adjacent property fell on a vehicle in the driveway of the Pinang Peranakan Mansion in Church Street, crushing tourists Liu Zhu, 69, and his daughter, Liu Xinxin, 36.

Lim said her office has contacted the Penang Island City Council to request that the safety of trees in the Tanjong area is continuously monitored and preventive measures taken to avoid similar tragedies in the future.

Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow had previously said the state government would not provide compensation as the incident occured on a private property. He said the next-of-kin could consider taking legal action against the property owner.
