KUALA LUMPUR: Federal Territories Minister Annuar Musa today apologised to traders who will be unable to operate their food businesses in the upcoming Ramadan month, saying however that sacrifices must be made “in times like this”.
Speaking to reporters here, he said the decision by the National Security Council (NSC) to call off all forms of bazaar during the fasting month was to ensure public safety during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I understand the NSC’s decision means that they will lose their source of income for the month.
“But in times like this, everyone needs to make some sacrifices,” he said.
This follows the announcement by Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob yesterday that no form of Ramadan bazaar would be allowed, including the drive-thru and “pack and pick” methods previously suggested as alternatives.
On whether the government would provide the traders with financial aid, he said Putrajaya had already announced the Prihatin economic stimulus package for those affected by the movement control order.
On a separate matter, he said the ministry would raise RM2 million through donations to provide food for foreigners under lockdown in the city.
“We anticipate that there will be more areas here placed under enhanced movement control order,” he said.
“If this happens, we need to provide them with food.”
He added that his ministry would hold discussions with the armed forces on the matter.
The Menara City One, Selangor Mansion and Malayan Mansions are currently under lockdown as are the surrounding areas at Jalan Masjid India.
