KUALA LUMPUR: Senior Minister (Economy) Mohamed Azmin Ali has dismissed the likelihood of snap polls being called this year.
Azmin said the government’s focus was on economic recovery and restoring investor confidence which was affected by Covid-19.
He said the government needed at least one year to get the economy back on track.
“We introduced the Prihatin and Penjana packages as part of our efforts to reduce the impact of Covid-19 (on the economy) and the outcomes look positive,” he said after visiting the Gombak district office.
He was commenting on the views of analysts that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s administration needs at least two more years to ensure the economy recovers.
“Everyone can give their views, it is up to them,” he said.
Azmin, who is the Gombak MP, also said the World Bank recently noted that Malaysia was among the countries that will record positive growth of between 6.3% and 7.5% in 2021.
He said this indicated that the international community had confidence that the present administration can ensure economic recovery and why their outlook for Malaysia was positive.
“This can restore the confidence of investors. These efforts need to continue because new investments can create high-value job opportunities for the people. This is the government’s focus now,” he said.
