Many know Gurmit Singh as Singapore’s beloved character, Phua Chu Kang. However, the comedian isn’t known to share his personal life, so when talking about his children, it’s no surprise that the star got a little emotional.
Gurmit was recently interviewed by a group of neurodivergent individuals as part of CNA Insider’s new series, “The Assembly”. During the interview, the star shared his thoughts on many topics, including his career and struggles with an inferiority complex. However, the one topic that caught the public’s attention was about his daughter, Gabrielle, being a drag and burlesque comedy performer in Singapore.

Gabrielle, who now goes by Worms and the stage name Lychee Bye, is a well-known icon in Singapore’s queer community. The 59-year-old was asked how he learnt to accept his daughter’s unconventional career path, to which he admitted it was difficult at first because she’s part of the queer community. He added, “But at the end of the day, she is still my daughter. Until the day I die, I will still love her.”
Gurmit continued saying they two may have different opinions of life choices but said, “She’s (Worms) is still my flesh and blood.” He also likened his relationship with his daughter to that of his with his parents, especially when he first wanted to become an actor. He said that even if he disagrees with it, he’ll continue to support his daughter’s career path, adding, “As a parent, as long as she’s happy, I’m happy.”

The father of three was also asked if he’s concerned about Worms’ physical safety and mental wellbeing since she might face difficulties as a queer person in Singapore. However, Gurmit said that his daughter has grown stronger mentally and has become more comfortable with her skin since coming out. He concluded, “She’s (now) proud of her skin, what she is, and how she is. So, in some respect, I can kind of appreciate where she is now.”
While it might not be easy for him, it’s heartwarming to see how much love and support Gurmit has for his daughter Worms. What are your thoughts on this interview?
