Malaysians were overjoyed when Astro Shaw announced plans to create a live-action movie for the beloved 90s cartoon “Keluang Man”. However, after the first trailer, some netizens have a lot to say about the language used.
For those unfamiliar, “Keluang Man” was a local cartoon series that aired on TV1 from 1998 to 2005. Malaysian cartoonist Kamn Ismail created the series, wanting to create a “national superhero”. The series was later adapted into a comic book in 1999. In 2023, Astro Shaw raised public interest after announcing plans to adapt the series into a live-action film, subsequently revealing that singer-actor Nas-T will play the titular superhero.

On 23rd February 2025, Astro Shaw unveiled the first official trailer for the film, giving viewers a first glimpse of Nas-T as Keluang Man. The teaser received a warm response, with many expressing excitement about seeing Keluang Man live in action. Some even praised the quality of the trailer, likening it to a Hollywood-level production. However, many also pointed out an obvious in the trailer – the excessive use of English.
The use of English in the Keluang Man movie sparked debate amongst fans, with some noting that it diminishes the series’ identity as a Malaysian-made character. Some said the movie should’ve used a fully Malay script to remain accurate to the original series. A few lamented the mixing of English and Malay language, or bahasa rojak, in local productions, saying it gives off the impression that only using the Malay language isn’t good enough for movies.

However, some comments defended the use of English, saying it modernises the series and makes it more realistic. Some noted that even the name “Keluang Man” is a mix of English and Malay, so English is expected in the film. Others pointed out that the 30-second video is only the trailer and doesn’t reflect the entire movie, so the usage of English might not be too excessive in the final cut.
“Keluang Man” is slated for release in cinemas nationwide on 29th May 2025. The movie also stars Remy Ishak, Rosyam Nor and many more. Are you excited about “Keluang Man”?
