Volvo EX90 launched in Thailand – three-row EV SUV with up to 517 PS, 600 km WLTP range; from RM556k
The Volvo EX90 has made its launch debut at the ongoing Thailand International Motor Expo, with three variants of the all-electric SUV being made available to customers. While it was revealed to the world in November 2022, a few delays meant production of the EX90 only started in the first half of this year instead of the original plan of Q4 2023.
In Thailand, the base variant of the EX90 known as the Twin Motor Plus retails for 4.29 million baht (about RM556k) and has seven seats. This comes with a dual-motor, all-wheel drive powertrain that serves up a total system output of 408 PS (402 hp or 300 kW) and 770 Nm, enabling a 0-100 km/h time of 5.9 seconds.
Next comes the Twin Motor Performance Ultra which is offered with either seven or six seats, both priced identically at 4.89 million baht (RM647k). The outputs are higher too at 517 PS (510 hp or 380 kW) and 910 Nm, bringing down the century sprint time to 4.9 seconds.
Both variants share the same top speed of 180 km/h (limited as per Volvo’s focus on safety) and come with a nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery with an gross energy capacity of 111 kWh (107 kWh usable). Weirdly, the Volvo Thailand website lists the same range figure of 745 km for all variants despite the difference in outputs. Said figure is based on the NEDC, with the WLTP figures mentioned during the initial debut being 600 km for the Twin Motor and 590 km for the Twin Motor Performance.
For charging, the EX90 supports a maximum AC input of 11 kW that will get the battery from 0-100% in approximately 10 hours. DC fast charging is also supported at a peak capacity of 250 kW, with a 10-80% state of charge achieved in about 30 minutes.
If you’re curious about its size, the EX90 measures 5,037 mm long, 1,964 mm wide, 1,744 mm tall and has a wheelbase that spans 2,985 mm. That makes it slightly longer and wider than its non-EV sibling, the XC90.
As for available equipment, the Thailand-spec EX90 is offered with 20-inch wheels, LED headlamps, a panoramic glass roof, a nine-inch instrument cluster display, a 14.5-inch central touchscreen infotainment system, a 14-speaker Bose sound system and four-zone climate control. This being a Volvo, a full complement of passive and active safety features are also standard.
Customers that opt for the more expensive Ultra variants will also get to enjoy an air suspension system (the Plus gets a standard Touring setup) with adaptive damping, high-definition pixel LED headlamps with active high beam, a massage function for the front seats as well as 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins 3D sound system.
The EX90 is also slated to be launched in Malaysia, with Volvo Car Malaysia previously saying the big SUV will arrive after the EX30 in 2024. For those considering the EX90 over the XC90, the EV will cost more, although not by much if we refer to Thailand’s price list. Over there, the XC90 Recharge plug-in hybrid starts from 4.09 million baht (RM530k) and tops out at 4.69 million baht (RM608k) – the EX90’s starting price is 5% more.
