A Rare Super Famicom Prototype Has Reached RM13 Million At Auction

An ultra rare Super Famicom prototype that is currently up for auction in Japan has probably already broken the record as having one of the highest and most expensive bid, to date. At the time of writing, the bid for the console is currently sitting in excess of ¥400,000,000, which is around RM13 million, and it’s still climbing. No, that is not a typo and yes, the auction still has four days to go.

That current bid for the Super Famicom prototype now overshadows the final auction price of the Nintendo PlayStation prototype console, which sold for US$360,000 (~RM1.7 million), back in 2020. It’s current value, by the way, could be worth far more at this time, given that it is believed to be the only unit that may have survived the the fallout between the two console giants.

For the uninitiated, the Super Famicom is what later became known as the Super Nintendo Entertainment System  (SNES) in North America. It is the successor to the original Famicom, or short for Family Computer, in Japan. Technically, Nintendo launched the console back in 1990, with the initial batch of 300,000 units selling out within hours. The repackaged SNES then made its way to the North American market in 1991.
