Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV sets Guinness World Record for greatest altitude change by an electric car – 5,802 m
A Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV has set a Guinness World Record for the greatest altitude change by an electric car – 5,802 metres. Organised by Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL), the record attempt saw a team from Evo India drive the EV over 14 days and 4,900 km from Umling La, Ladakh (India’s highest motorable point, 5,799 metres above sea level) to Kuttanad, Kerala (three metres below sea level).
The unmodified (pre-facelift) Ioniq 5 braved challenging terrain and extreme climatic conditions, from the Himalayas’ freezing temperatures and steep mountain passes to Kerala’s humid coastal regions.
“We are incredibly proud to see the Hyundai Ioniq 5 create history by achieving the Guinness World Record for the Greatest Altitude Change by an Electric Car. This achievement is a testament to Hyundai’s unwavering commitment to innovation, technological excellence, and sustainability.
“The Ioniq 5’s performance in such extreme conditions reflects its engineering prowess and durability. At Hyundai, we are dedicated to pushing boundaries and setting new benchmarks in e-mobility, and this record further reinforces our vision of ‘Progress for Humanity’,” said HMIL MD Unsoo Kim.
India only has one pre-facelift Ioniq 5 variant, priced at 46.05 lakh rupees (RM241k), ex-showroom. It has a 72.6 kWh battery just like Malaysia’s Max variant, but unlike our two motors (305 PS/605 Nm altogether), India’s car has just one 217 PS/350 Nm rear motor, yielding 631 km of range and a 0-100 km/h time of 7.6 seconds (versus our Max variant’s 430 km and 5.2 seconds).
Unveiled globally earlier this year, the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 facelift gets a battery capacity bump from 77.4 to 84 kWh, chunkier front and rear bumpers, reinforcement and refinement upgrades, a new N Line variant and (at least in the US) a new rugged XRT variant.
