NGV transition assistance programme for taxis, private vehicles – application deadline is Dec 31, MoT reminds
The government announced last month that it is ending the use of natural gas vehicles (NGVs) in Malaysia, and rolled out an NGV transition assistance programme for the 44,383 active NGV vehicles in the country, which includes 9,509 taxis and 32,137 private vehicles.
The NGV transition assistance programme was drawn up for Petronas to assist NGV users to transition to other fuels, and also to avoid any potential risks from unauthorised modifications. The deadline for application is December 31, and the transport ministry (MoT) is reminding NGV users of this.
Package 1 includes a one-off RM3,000 payment for NGV taxi drivers, which will come in the form of a Setel e-voucher. Package 2 involves free removal of NGV kits for dual-fuel vehicle owners. Under this plan, NGV kits can be removed for free at appointed workshops selected by the transport ministry. Package 3 is for owners of mono-fuel NGV-powered vehicles, who are eligible for a one-off payment based on the vehicle’s current value.
The deadline for applications is December 31 for Packages 1 and 3, and April 30, 2025 for Package 2. MoT reiterates that road tax for vehicles that still have NGV kits will not be renewable from July 1, 2025, which means these vehicles will no longer be roadworthy.
