Who does not want to be on the first page or even the second page when someone does a Google search?
Before I start, Google these words – rookie authors – and see if you do not see one of my websites on the top of page one!
Try relationship books – I think that shows up on Google's page two. Just for kicks, I tried typing the two words into Bing, and found the site on their page two! I was surprised, so I guess the search engines do pretty much the same thing.
So, it can be done.
Websites or "domain names" increase in value if it shows up on the first couple of pages of Google. Domain names (URLs) are also key toward gaining ideal visibility in search engines.
The Title is a key factor. Both of the above domain names garner great position in the Google search engine because the title matches the search. If someone is searching for relationship books, they will be led to the website with that title – although title is not the only supporting factor for obtaining SEO – Search Engine Optimization.
Although I can not divulge all of the tricks of the trade (because everyone would use them all), I can say that the title is a very key factor.
I can say that your URL needs to be independent, and not a forwarded website off the main link.
For example – one of my domain names – lean lifestyle, is forwarded off my main website. People do not see the forwarding, they just go to that website. The search engines will not be of any help searching those forwarded domains. It's cheaper for me to buy domains, and use the forwarding technique, but the others mentioned earlier are totally independent domains. On the other hand, if I choose to make that site independent (because I want to start a weight-loss or fitness online business), then I would make that domain independent, and I could get it to crawl to page one or two in the Google search engine.
Sometimes, no matter what you do, your domain will never see the light of day. My name is John Tyler. If one were to Google that name, my primary website would never appear because the 10th president of the United States is preeminent in the first multiple pages of Google, but if you add author, my.net site appears fairly early on – within two pages on Google. That is a test site, and I use it to continue my work and research into SEO.
Another factor that I seem to have noticed is article writing. When I write articles for Ezine, or Faithwriters.com or Helium – or half a dozen others, the story headline looks to give me great exposure on the web, and people link back to my primary site – the one that I want them to arrive at.
My John Tyler website has 55,072 hits on it as of February 11th, and I get about 32 hits a day – mostly from people looking for real estate in my neck of the woods – or agents from agents who want to spy on me to see what I 'm up to. I design my own sites and do it for some real estate agents or authors, and I've learned to test – test – test. The John Tyler website has a cute little elevator that opens … sort of a lobby feel, and my web guests get to push the elevator buttons on the wall. From there, they get to go to a virtual floor where they can find what they need …. just like in a mall. I have added video to my entire site …. there'a a video communication covering whichever subject my web guests link to. I believe in the power of video, so I want to communicate directly with clients using video. This is why YouTube is so popular.
Originally, I thought video would take too long to open, or that people would not like the personal conversations that I have with them, and that video might be something that is futuristic, but I was wrong. My hits actually increased, and some have told me that they appreciate the clarity, and that it beats hunting around a website trying to read tons of useless information. So, it stays. I design websites because I like the creativity that is involved. It is not my profession, but it's fun.
The article writing is done because I'm a writer, and because I know that those articles lead people back to the intended sites, so I would definitely recommend that you write some articles for Ezine, Helium, Faithwriters … depending on your bent …. maybe even Biznik. Some of the Faithwriters articles that I have written have garnered over 700 hits from readers interested in that particular subject, so if you are good at what you do, tell people about it, and they will want to know more about you – and more about what you do. On February 10th and 11th, Biznik posted my article on writing books on their front page, so I got great exposure just from being persistent in writing articles.
Another way that I can get good visibility is by writing books.
If, for example, someone goes to Books.Google.com (yeah, it's backwards … Books comes before Google), and types in the word friendships, they will stumble across one of my books (5th from the top – on the first page). If they type in a diary of a dieter, looking for that specific title, that book comes to the very top of the Google Books page, and a click on the cover brings them to a page-turning e-book sample … with links to several of my book sites.
SEO is all about actively placing your name, your domain title, and what you do … in as many places as possible, and you keep checking your progress on Google, for example, and check it out week to week. My relationship books site was on the 5th page at one time, and now it shows up on page two … third from the top – in capital letters!
Some people pay IT specialists or others who promise optimal search engine positioning, but you can do this yourself and save a ton of money. Nobody can guarantee you top billing … other than by putting you into a sponsored program where you pay x dollars, and they can place you to the right of the search pages … and generally local to where your business comes from. You know, buy a town type of thing. If you want to be on the top or top right of a local (town) Google search, you could do that yourself, too … just by using Google AdWords.
I write for another website that I created, so if someone were searching for daily devotionals from the Bible, and they are Christians, they might type in the words Christian daily bread. If they do, they will see that title name appear on page one of Google – third from the top. The second from the top is the famous Our Daily Bread magazine website. You can see, however, that my title beat out a host of others. If you look at the top of that Google page, you will see that 1,670,000 inquiries containing Christian Daily Bread were posed, so creeping up to the top of page one is pretty good SEO. The bottom line appears to be that we must be diligent, and be everywhere we can be in order to have people link back to our sites.
Buying Proper Domain Names
Another way to do that is to buy domain names and link them all back to your primary site. If, for example, someone wanted a divorce – they might type in the word irreconcilable. If they do, they would never come across the domain name that I bought bearing that single name with a dot com. If, however, someone typed in that name and dot com, they would find the domain at the very top of the Google search page, so everything is in a name. That would lead them back to the site that I use to market business domain names that I've been sitting on for years and years …. before the big dot com bust.
It is my belief, and I'm providing it regularly, that the domain name must coincide with your business model. For example: If you were thinking about owning an online business that wanted to perform online bill paying for customers (or, I suppose it could be done if you owned a brick and mortar bank). There are two ways to get the top of the food chain of SEO, and they would be to buy a domain name that matches keywords that you know people will be typing in …. like online bill paying, and then make sure that the domain name is stand-alone, and not forwarded (like I do with domain names that I market), and that name in the title, would creep to the top during a Google search.
The second way to do it, is to own the domain names that match keywords that your clients are typing into the search engines …. get to the front page of Google, etc., and then when they click on that domain name, it would take them to your primary site …. Joe's bank & Trust. Either way accomplishes the same objective.
That's how things work.
