SEO professionals know how important our job is: taking websites and restructuring their existing format to rank higher in the SERP's (Search Engine Results Pages for the neophytes). Search Engine Optimization, when done correctly, equals more eyes to the prize and a greater number of conversions, ie more bang for the bucks. The greater number of targeted eyes to a clients website equals more dollars through the virtual front door. However, do the 'powers that be' know that it's your concern and attention to detail that creates those dollars? If not, you're in real trouble.

Here are a few things to keep in mind while working hard to make that website shine:

1. What is your reporting process? CTR, Conversions, Hits, etc, are good for our eyes but how do they translate to dollars? IMHO, you've got to employ the CYA policy: what is the process in place to accurately translate the traffic increase you're creating to dollar signs?

2. How do you convey your hard work to those that determined whether or not you keep your job? Now it's good to know that SEO is gaining popularity and importance, but there are a lot of employers out there who hear the buzzwords, but do not understand that Search Engine Optimization is an ongoing experience. Note I say SEO … NOT PPC. If they're looking for results in 60 days without a paid search campaign, then you have not done your job, or you took the WRONG job. You have to educate your employers about the turnaround time for SEO: it's not instant results, but repeatedly working the process again and again that results in website success and higher rankings across the major search engines.

3. Promote! Promote! Promote! You've got to sell yourself and the process on a daily / weekly basis. Get the buzz out about how many backlinks you're getting, or the number of hits a particular site is sending you that results in higher conversions. You've got to promote yourself on a daily basis and get others involved in what you do. We're not wizards in castles weaving magic wands to the oohs and ahhs of the crowd. We are an essential part of any marketing program designed to promote the corporation and reap the rewards. Are they doing anything in social media? If not, then why not? Keep your eyes alert for opportunities to gain access to different online avenues that will bring more eyes to the prize.

It's important that you promote yourself daily. Keep in mind that what matters is your oncoming success and ability to learn while you keep the guys who write the checks happy and aware of what you're doing and how you're doing it.
