In early June, South Korean singer IU (아이유) charmed local fans at her two-day concert at Axiata Arena. The H.E.R. World Tour Concert in Kuala Lumpur received tons of media attention and even trended on social media. Months later, fans were delighted with the star’s vlog of the concert, sharing what happened behind the scenes and some of the main highlights from the two shows.
As expected, there are many things that we can break down from the video – but it’s clear that IU’s KL concerts created a lot of new happy moments. Here are five things in particular that the singer likes about the city and her fans in Malaysia, as shared in her recent vlog:
The Name Of The City
Surprisingly, IU said the city’s name is enough to make her happy. According to the singer, the pronunciation of Kuala Lumpur in Korean makes her smile because she’ll end up grinning after pronouncing the final syllable. She also told viewers who are having a hard day to say “Kuala Lumpur” if they want to smile again.
“KUAENA Is The Cutest”
The lovely IU gives personalised nicknames for her fans, UAENAs, depending on the cities she visited for her tour. The name given to fans during her Malaysian stop was KUAENAs, a combination of Kuala Lumpur and her fan club. However, the singer said out of all the nicknames, she finds KUAENA to be the cutest in terms of pronunciation.
Learning New Malaysian Words
The 31-year-old revealed that she learned a few Malay words in preparation for her KL concert to better communicate with her local fans. As shown in the video, IU learned words like “sangat (very)” and “mantap (great)” and put them to good use while on stage. She also took the opportunity to praise her fans, saying things like, “Kamu sangat cantik (you’re very pretty)” and “Kamu sangat sweet (you’re very sweet)”.
Her KL Fans’ Bright Smiles
Malaysian fans often sing along to the songs during concerts, a fact that South Korean songbird picked up during her show. However, IU also noted that her KUAENAs would smile when they sang, which led her to praise them, “I guess you were born with a smiling face.” Later on, she also asked the crowd to share photos of them smiling on social media so she could look at them.
The Memories She Made With Her Fans – Both Past And Present
During the concert, IU repeatedly mentioned her last show in KL, which took place five years ago. She said that she often watched videos from that time but noted that her KL fans had gotten lovelier since then. She also surprised the crowd by recreating a performance from her first KL concert, even wearing the same outfit.
Towards the end of the vlog, IU also shared her reaction to the special gift made for her – a book containing messages from her adoring fans. The touching moment sheds light on the strong bond the singer shares with her international fans. We hope to see more of IU’s trip to KL and hope she’ll return as soon as possible!
